Ohio State Buckeyes 2010-2011 Season Preview

2009 Total Offense Rank (yards per game): 68
2009 Total Defense Rank (yards per game): 5

2010 is poised to be another dominant year for the Ohio State Buckeyes. After an eleven win season in 2009, including a Rose Bowl win over Oregon, the Buckeyes return 16 of 22 starters. With question marks on some of the other national powerhouses, this could be the year Ohio State wins it all.

Junior quarterback Terrelle Pryor is the centerpiece of Ohio State’s offense. Not only did he throw for over 2,000 yards and 18 touchdowns, he also led the team in rushing with 1,014 yards. He is an amazing athlete and it is hard to believe he has only been playing college football for two years. Starting receivers DeVier Posey and Dane Sanzenbacher return after accounting for 67 percent of the receiving yards last year.

The passing game was not overly strong in 2009, but it didn’t have to be because of the superb running game. Running backs Brandon Saine and Daniel Herron combined for 1,339 yards and 11 touchdowns last season. As a team, the Buckeyes rushed for 200 yards a game. Most of the offense line returns in 2010, so the Buckeyes should again be able to rely on their powerful ground game.

Ohio State’s defense was absolutely amazing last season, ranking in the top five in yards allowed per game and surrendering only 12.5 points per game. The defense returns seven starters, so look for them to continue their success. Defensive lineman Cameron Heyward decided to return for his senior season after leading the team in sacks. Also, the top two tacklers return in linebackers Ross Homan and Brian Rolle.

Jim Tressel’s team has all the pieces to contend for a national championship in 2010, as long as Pryor can stay healthy. This team should easily win the Big Ten conference and be one of the best teams in the country.
