The Rutgers Scarlet Knights have been enjoying a lot of success under coach Greg Schiano who took a floundering program and made it relevant again. This season fans will be expecting this team to at least compete for the division and get an invitation to a decent bowl game.

One season after nearly stealing the starting quarterback role in training camp as a rookie, Tom Savage goes in to this season knowing the role of starting pivot is his after throwing for 14 TDs and just 7 interceptions with a 128.5 passer rating last season.

His star target on offense is Mohamed Sanu. Sanu had 51 receptions for 639 yards and a 12.5 average yards per catch last season. If Savage can send some more balls Sanu’s way, the sophomore wide receiver will no doubt improve on those numbers. To be really dangerous, the Scarlet Knights will need someone else to step up at receiver after losing deep threat Tim Brown.

The biggest worry with the offense is the offensive line. They were the teams weakness last year and a string of injuries means they will do well to be no worse than last year. Savage and Sanu could be magic, but they need time and the o-line isn’t likely to provide it.

Senior Joe Martinek looks like he will be the go-to guy at running back. His 4.7 average last year didn’t distinguish him, but he will be good enough to take some pressure off of the passing attack.
There is a lost of change on defense, but it looks to be a lot more solid than the offense with players easing in to starting roles rather than being thrown in like on the offense.

They’ve got some excellent potential in the defensive line that could make them one of the most dangerous units in the Big East. They have an aggressive, hard-hitting safety and some promising young linebackers.

Last year’s team started the season with a loss to division rival Cincinnati Bearcats from which they were not able to recover. This team will be expected to challenge for top spot and they will need to be sharp from the first week to do it. They really need their offensive line to come together if they are to continue improving and that doesn’t seem quite so likely.

Rutgers Scarlet Knights odds to win the Big East: +500.
