The Pittsburgh Panthers have been steadily improving under coach Dave Wannstedt. If they want to continue that trend, they are going to have to win the Big East championship after falling to the Cincinnati Bearcats in last year’s game.

The big question for the offense is quarterback. Tino Sunseri will be the pivot in his first year as a starter. He will need to avoid any big mistakes while running the offense for this team to succeed.

The bright side for the Pittsburgh Panthers is that Sunseri has a lot of weapons to work with. Sophomore All-American Dion Lewis will take a lot of pressure off of Sunseri. The elite running back is getting preseason Heisman attention as he has the ability to regularly gain big yards. He averaged 5.5 yards per carry last year and ran for 17 touchdowns.

The receiving corps is similarly stacked Jonathan Baldwin giving the Panthers a deep threat that will stretch out the defense and give the running game more space.

On defense, the Panthers need a couple of cornerbacks to step up and replace departed starters. Otherwise, the Panthers are returning a number of dangerous players at linebacker and safety. They have a particularly dangerous defensive line that is effective against the run and can get to opposing quarterbacks. Pressuring the quarterback will be particularly important this season with a less-experienced secondary.

The Panthers have all of the tools to win the Big East this year. They have play-makers on both offense and defense who can take pressure off of their first-year starters. They won’t need a great quarterback to succeed on offense, just someone who can keep the ball safe. Their defense will make stops even if they are a little weak at corner back.

Pittsburgh Panthers odds to win the Big East: +250.
